Dassanayaka Yoga is the perfect place to come when you need to stop and take a moment from the demands of your day to day routine. This tranquil, friendly and unique studio, is based in a converted local milk bar, just moments away from bustling High Street, Northcote.

This is one of the more interesting yoga studios around. There is a strong base of dedicated members of all ages from the local community, but many travel from other neighbourhoods to take part in our daily practice, or to attend meditation and yoga workshop intensives. The warmly decorated studio offers a place to relax and focus on your yoga practice, unwinding to the trickle of the fountain, amongst Eastern statues and icons.

You can experience a candlelit night-time class to wind down for the evening, or an energy-generating morning class to boost your day. Take time in our spacious garden to admire the new growth and leave with a handful of homegrown veggies. You may even be rewarded with a gorgeous meal cooked by Channa (he's actually a master of Sri Lankan cuisine, who has dedicated his life to teaching yoga).

Healing Sessions with Kirsten

Kirsten is currently conducting private healing sessions at Dassanayaka Yoga. For over 25 years, Kirsten has been studying, practicing, coaching and facilitating body/mind/subconscious healing. Known as an energy-healer extraordinaire by people around the world, Kirsten divides her time between residences in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala and Australia while travelling extensively.

Her early studies in Metaphysics led to studies of the functioning of the mind and she later obtained a diploma in Clinical Hypnosis. She plays an active role throughout Australia, North and Central America in seminars on creative thinking and the way we create our own circumstances.

In her unique style of energy work, she connects intuitively with the imbalances in a client's energy body and assists them in releasing the emotional charge in the body memories, thus recreating balance and harmony. Her approach is gentle, grounded and powerful.

Healing Sessions are 60-90 minutes long and cost $80.

Some easy recipes from Channa's book 'Sri Lankan Flavours'

Yellow Rice (p5)

This is my mother’s version of a popular Sri Lankan dish, rich in flavour and colourful on the table. Her secret is that she always added chopped coriander and natural yoghurt to the rice just before serving. This gives a beautiful aroma, and balances the sweet flavours of the nuts and sultanas.

2 cups basmati rice
3 1/2 cups water, vegetable stock or chicken stock
1 teaspoon ground tumeric
1 teaspoon salt
2 cloves
3 cardamom pods, crushed
6 curry leaves (or one bay leaf)
1 cinnamon stick
6 peppercorns
2 tablespoons ghee or butter
50g raw cashews
50 g sultanas
½ cup chopped coriander leaves (optional)
2 tablespoons natural yoghurt (optional)

Rinse rice thoroughly with water until the water runs clear.
Put water or stock in a pot over medium heat, add tumeric, salt, cloves, cardamom, curry leaves, cinnamon and peppercorns and brig to the boil. Stir briefly and add rice. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and simmer 20-25 minutes then remove from heat.

In a little pan on medium heat, melt the ghee or butter, add cashews and sultanas and sauté until golden brown. Add the mixture to the rice and mix well. Either serve as is or stir through coriander and yoghurt just before serving.

Serves 4-6

Tempered Water Spinach - Kangkung (p50)

A fast, tasty and healthy way to prepare any leafy green vegetables

1 bunch water spinach (or regular spinach, bok choy, choy sum or any leafy green vegetable)
1 tablespoon oil
½ cup sliced onion
1 green chilli, sliced
1 tomato, diced
¼ teaspoon crushed dried chilli
¼ teaspoon salt

Break the lower stems off the green vegetable and discard.
Heat the oil in a shallow pan over medium heat.
Add onion, green chilli and tomato. Cook until golden brown, about 1 minute.
Increase heat to high, add spinach (or your leafy greens), crushed chilli and salt, and quickly stir fry, tossing until leaves are cooked but still hold their shape.

Tip: Before adding the greens, the pan must be very hot or the spinach will wilt. Some vegetables will require less than one minute of cooking at this high temperature.

Coconut and Tamarind Sambol - Thosai Sambol (p30)

Anyone who tries this dish loves it. This is a wet sambol that can accompany any main meal.

45g tamarind pulp
1 cup warm water
4 green chillies
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tablespoon crushed ginger
½ teaspoon ground tumeric
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (75g) desiccated or shredded coconut

Soak tamarind pulp in water for 10 minutes. Strain it, discarding pulp.
Place chillies, garlic and ginger in a food processor and pulse into a paste (or use a mortar and pestle if your processor won’t blend very small amounts).
Add tumeric, salt and coconut. Process.
Add tamarind liquid to processor and mix well.

This sambol keeps in the fridge for a week. Serves 6
